The Story of "Raffia"

At the heart of BerberSole sandals is raffia, a natural fiber that comes from the leaves of the raffia palm. Light, flexible and durable, it has been used for centuries in Morocco and across Africa to create baskets, hats, and artisanal goods.

But when it comes to sandals, raffia is one of the hardest materials to work with. Unlike synthetic fabrics, it has no shortcuts: each strand must be carefully prepared, softened, and woven by hand.

This process takes hours of patience and skill, and it’s what makes every pair of BerberSole sandals truly unique.

How We Transform Raffia?

• Selection: Only the best raffia fibers are chosen, strong enough to support daily wear.
• Preparation: Fibers are cleaned, dried, and split into fine threads ready for weaving.
• Weaving: Artisans twist and braid raffia by hand, shaping it into straps and details that are both strong and elegant.
• Coloring: Raffia can be left in its natural sandy tone, or dyed with natural and eco-friendly pigments. Coloring raffia is delicate work,it must be soaked and dried multiple times to achieve vibrant, lasting shades without losing flexibility.
